Hip

The hip is one of the most mobile joints in the body, allowing us to walk, run, sit, squat, and stand, among other basic activities. So when there is a problem with the hip, whether it’s arthritis in the joint or the need for a total hip replacement, physical therapy is a proven and effective treatment for pain, rehabilitation, and restoration of mobility and function.

CONDITIONS

Arthritis

Your hip joint is made up of the humeral head and acetabulum. The ends of the bone are covered in a tissue called cartilage and the joints are covered with hyaline or articular cartilage. Healthy cartilage is very smooth and slippery, but wear and tear through the years results in a loss of that cartilage. That loss is called osteoarthritis or “arthritis,” for short.

Total hip replacement

Total hip replacement surgery is typically recommended for people who have chronic hip pain, severe arthritis, and loss of function and mobility. In a total hip replacement, surgeons replace the joint surfaces to decrease pain and improve function. Hip replacements are usually easier recoveries than knee replacements, but symptoms can still take 3-6+ months to recover and feel “normal” again.

Labral tears

A labral tear is an injury to the tissue that holds the ball and socket parts of the hip together. The torn hip labrum can be painful, reduce your range of motion, and/or cause your hip to lock up when walking, getting up, or turning suddenly. Athletes participating in sports such as ice hockey, soccer, football, golf, and ballet are at higher risk of developing hip labral tears.
